Fring is Here!

Posted by admin November - 30 - 2009 - Monday 4 COMMENTS

I first started using Fring on my Windows Mobile phone about 2 years ago. Fring is best known for their light weight IM capabilities including Skype calls. I copied the following press release directly from the fring.com website:

Android device users can now get onto fring (we know you’re been missing us since some of you recently switched to Android devices :-) ) with (the first) free VoIP calls over Skype, MSN and GoogleTalk and via hundreds of SIP providers. As always you can see real-time presence and live chat with your ICQ, Yahoo! And AIM buddies too. You can also use Twitter there, as part of  your integrated contact list.

fring on android works over 3G, GPRS or Wi-Fi internet connection.

androidDroid_skype-call_small

What do you need to do to get your hands on this brand-new version?

You have 2 simple options for getting fring onto your Android device:

1.    Get it directly from the Android Market:

•    Start the Market application on your phone

•    Search for fring and install

2.    Get it from fring’s WAP site:

•    On your Android phone, go to Settings > Applications and check the box to allow ’unknown sources

•    Point your phone browser to m.fring.com and download

A big thank you to our early access group for your invaluable feedback over the past few weeks!

Welcome to the big, happy, free fring family fringdroid-ers!

Known Issues (Will be fixed in the next version):

- GSM contacts do not appear in fring’s buddy list on the Motorola DROID device
- Call disconnection tone may be heard a few times when terminating a call
- SIP and SkypeOut calls are not yet available on the Motorola DROID device

Android Fever…..Today's smartphone flavor of the moment

Posted by David R. Scott November - 18 - 2009 - Wednesday 1 COMMENT

The U.S. wireless carriers all have a new buzzword…..Android…..Droid…..Droid Does….iDon’t (the VZW spin on the iPhone) or whatever you want to call the latest mobile OS from Google.  The market here stateside has been gaga over Apple’s iPhone since it’s release in June 2007 and now there is a shiny new toy to compete with it in the marketplace and  the media can’t get enough of Android.

The big deal seems to be the open source for developers which makes the Android a popular smartphone choice today; in comparison, both Apple and RIM have proprietary OS’s, and while that isn’t bad (as shown by their popularity), open source is the way to go in the future.

So, that being said, should everyone go out and throw their iPhone’s and BlackBerry’s in the phone recycling bin?  Hardly…both smartphones are wildly popular and BlackBerry is still the Enterprise-approved standard smartphone plus the iPhone is a really great device with lots of great applications.

Android is a great system and I like what it offers, but it isn’t the Silver Bullet to kill the iPhone or BlackBerry, but it is going to make the others step up even further with new features, etc. and it will make a large dent in their sales over the coming years.

Android fever is here now – let’s check back this time next year and see if the market still is in love-affair mode; my opinion is maybe not quite as much, but it has long-term ability to be a player not just here in the U.S. but worldwide.

Flixster_AndroidFlixster is the most popular movie application on Facebook and has become it’s own social network at Flixster.com Like any other social site you can add friends, send messages, and even IM om the site. It’s an easy way to network with similar people since you can see other user’s movie ratings and reviews but also a percentage 1-100 of how similar your tastes are in movies.

Flixster has had an application available in the Android Market for some time which allows you to view movies currently in theaters and on DVD. You can view reviews and watch the trailers. On October 27th they updated the app to allow you to login and view your own movies as well as rate and review new movies!

These new features set it apart as the premier movie app on Android and designate it a social media application! Rating movies may sound like a weak way to go about doing some social networking but people are passionate about cinema and the application will automatically match you up with people who have similar tastes.

Making contacts and adding friends directly from the application can be easy and the more moviews you rate and review the more people who will be likely to find you and add you as their friend.

In addition to being a great social tool, the Flixster app is also a great local movies tool. you can look up all your local theaters and check showtimes. You can read critic and user reviews and watch trailers. If you are at all into movies you need this application.

May the Droid be with you

With its second Operating System (OS) version hitting the street, Google’s Android OS is going to take market share from its competitors, but it won’t kill Apple’s proprietary OS that runs on the iPhone.  Who will be the biggest loser in the Global OS battle?

The most likely losers will be Microsoft’s Windows Mobile and Nokia’s Symbian OS; why you ask?  Well, let’s take a peek at those two for a moment; the new Window’s Mobile version 6.5 is still largely based on a Pocket PC device introduced in 1997…any further questions?  It may hang on for a bit due to IT departments are comfortable using it, which at this point is it’s only selling point.  Nokia’s Symbian OS, the world’s largest, is mainly installed on cellular phones and not smartphones; plus Nokia is moving to an open source platform called Maemo, but skeptics are not in favor of its potential.

With that being said, with all the new Android smartphones hitting the street in the U.S. and 3 of the major carriers now offering them (T-Mobile with 3, Verizon Wireless launching the Motorola Droid, and Sprint with the HTC Hero), Apple  and BlackBerry can’t be very comfortable right about now.

What’s so great about Android?  It’s an open source platform based on Linux, which means it’s open for development and not proprietary like Apple and BlackBerry’s OS’s.  Apple and Android have tons of apps and it’s not the sheer number that will win this battle, and both have more than anyone could ever need.  What Android has that the others don’t have, is Google’s turn-by-turn navigation which is built in to the Motorola Droid on Verizon Wireless.  It’s easier to use and more robust than its competitors and also free; Garmin’s Nuvi Phone, just entering the U.S. market, is going to have even tough sledding now.

So, in the long run, Android is predicted to win the OS war in the next 3-5 years, but Apple and BlackBerry aren’t going to go down without a fight, and the three behemoths will all continue to grow at the expense of Windows Mobile, Symbian, and Palm.

As for me, my new Motorola Cliq should be on its way soon and I got to play with one extensively today at my local T-Mobile store and I have to say…hurry Mr. Postman.

I blog on Android and other related topics and you can find me at http://davidrscott.wordpress.com. You can also find and connect with me on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn by searching for davidrscott at those sites.

Mobile Defense for Android, Protect your investment.

Posted by Brandon Scott November - 5 - 2009 - Thursday ADD COMMENTS

mobile defense androidSo I was playing basketball with some friends about a month or so ago. My buddy LOVES his iPhone and literally cannot separate himself from it for more than just a few minutes. So were at the gym playing ball and we didn’t notice it but some kids were hanging around our stuff in one corner of the gym.  When we were done playing his phone was gone. Stolen. We knew what the kids looked like and everything but could not do anything about the stolen phone. He was just out 400 bucks. Bad day.

Enter Mobile Defense For Android (also available for Blackberry ….but not the iPhone). It took first place in the android developer challenge in the security category, for a bunch of reasons but to really understand its power you need to try it yourself. Its free.mobidefense

Installing the Mobile Defense application and setting it up is really easy. You however will need a computer to get everything to the point that you can actually use and enjoy the application.

After you have downloaded and installed the application it will prompt you to sign in, both online and on the phone itself. Then once both accounts are created and everything is all set up the application will ask you to reboot the phone. At which point the icon will disappear from your pull up menu housing all your applications at the bottom of your screen and there will be no way to know that it is installed on your phone until you access a more administrative menu such as the one used to uninstall applications.

mobidef2

Now for the fun part. After logging in to the dashboard on their website and signing in to your account, the real power of the application is there at your fingertips. it will give you the option to connect with the device. Clicking that button prompts Mobile Defense’s server to send a text message to the phone activating a secure remote session with the phone itself thru the application.Android Mobile Defense

Mobile Defense

From there your phone is just a click away. You have the ability to see a real time GPS location of your phone and it is displayed in a Google maps window. You also have a few other options…. It will tell you what network the phone is running on, its battery level, whether or not it is charging, how strong of a signal it is sending, its lattitude, longitude, and it will indicate how fast the phone is traveling.

The alarm feature in this application is in my estimation the most useful feature of the entire app. In the event you believe your phone is stolen you have the option to set off a ONE TIME SILENCE-ABLE alarm. Basically it sounds like a car alarm going off in someones pocket. That really caught my attention because imagine finding the phone on the embarrassed theif because you set off its alarm.  But to me the more likely application of this feature would be; you realize your phone has been misplaced and rather that having your buddy call it over and over again you can set off the alarm that rings loudly and obnoxiously for as long as the phone has battery life to sustain it.

mobidefensebeforesilence BLUR

Upon seeing this message the user does have the option to silence the phone, and contact you. Also, its up to you what to write in the message that is sent to the phone, you can change it and update it and tweak it all in real time.

mobidefaftersilence BLUR

So then i wanted to test, if i were to steal this phone and it were to go off, I would be interested in immediately silencing it and walking away. So i looked into how to defeat the alarm and i came up with one solution. Turn off the phone. Or push the silence button. I tried to just deactivate the ringer that will work only once), and i tried to adjust the volume of the phone down, but to no avail. The only way to defeat this app, is to turn off the phone. That will immediately end all tracking and alarms and texts received by the phone. But as soon as the phone is turned back on it is fully controllable again. For me however, the main functionality of this app will be finding it in the couch at a friends house or in a car under the seat or something. Luckily we have few opportunities in our lifetimes to chase down phone criminals and bring them to justice.

Download Mobile Defense in the market, its free, adware free, and almost flawlessly functional.

Droid Does: Verizon powers up Android!

Posted by Brandon Scott November - 4 - 2009 - Wednesday ADD COMMENTS

droidExcellent news Androiders. It seems Verizon wireless is going to be the ‘financial backer’ so to speak for the android platform’s up and coming embarrassment of the iPhone. Their new campaign states something to the effect of “everything that is missing from the iPhone, the Moto Droid delivers.” All under the unholy clan badge of android. They are launching a website called droid does, composed of some pretty sweet graphic art.  The intent is; to point out the previously infallible iPhone’s vast shortcomings, and crush them, with all the style and attitude of a modern revolution.

This will be Verizon Wireless’ largest advertising campaign to date, all to promote the Motorola Droid. We remember hearing whispers of apple and Verizon having some meetings to discuss the iPhone on Verizon but all of the sudden we hear Droid Does, and Apple and Verizon didn’t… yet…

The Moto Droid (Motorola) is going to be the first device to run android 2.0. Which will enable tons of new features like revamped market, Exchange server support, improved keyboard layout, a smart dictionary attached to the keyboard that includes contact names as suggestions, infinite scrolling in Google calendar agenda mode, (I will use that for days) Bluetooth object push, Bluetooth powered peer to peer communication and proximity based social interactions, (games with other Androiders over Bluetooth)  Faster and better searching, Turn by turn directions free, and courtesy of the new Google maps application….and tons and tons and tons and tons more…. Hallelujah.

droidopen

The phone itself (super sweet android 2.0 aside) boasts some exciting features for Verizon customers too… a 5mp camera with image stabilization and auto focus, DVD D1 Capture, Twice the resolution of most screens in the mobile device realm (854 x 480 pixel resolution) and up to 16 million colors, (that’s more than you can see..) Two LED Flashes (for dark night picture taking), 3.7 inch display, 16g on-board memory, expandable up to 32g with a micro SD, a 3.5mm headset jack and the list goes on. The only real downsides people have brought up are; “The keyboard isn’t staggered and the buttons don’t feel like i want them too” and “Its heavy.”  Someone needs a whamburger and some french cries. When 6 ounces is heavy, you gotta get off the couch and do some jumping jacks. I agree with the keyboard staggering thing but that’s probably mostly due to my G1. I’m saying, the impressive hardware combined with the awe-inspiring software will surely set a high mark for what Americans come to expect out of a smart phone.  Which in turn, for us android users, could translate into an exponentially larger interest in development of apps. More sweet hardware that includes more tools and capabilities translates into applications that just do more to please you. That’s really whats important when its all said and done right?  All this really just comes down to the fact that you and I are about to truly feel what its like to rule the world from our phone.

I think the teaser site says it best: This is no granola crunching, flower child phone. Its more powerful than you need and faster than you can handle. Basically, its everything you have ever wanted, and its ready to do your bidding. What shall you have it do first?

Get Excited
