URL Shortening and Tracking on Android

Posted by admin October - 28 - 2009 - Wednesday 2 COMMENTS

With so many services online to shorten your URLs many people are wondering how they should move forward. Short URLs are a huge convenience when working in limited space such as in twitter where you are limited to 140 characters or less.  In addition to shortening your URLs there are a few services that will also track your URL syndication by letting you know how many clicks you receive. This makes URL shortening a 2-in-1 tool for use in the social media and internet marketing arenas.

As an Android user there is one service that stands out. Bit.ly is the most widely used service among twitter users and now allows 3rd party applications to connect and shorten/track urls on your behalf. Bit.ly provides tools including browser plugins and shortcuts to make easier the use of their service. In addition to tracking your own URLs you can search twitter by keywords or by profile to see the results of other user’s Bit.ly links.

twidroidproAfter setting up your account with Bit.ly you will be able to access your unique user API. If you have the Twidroid PRO app on your Android you can enter your bit.ly username and api to shorten URLs in the Twidroid app via your own bit.ly account. This will allow you to view tracking results later and get quick access to shortened URLs.

urljuicer-androidThere is also another great app in the market for URL shortening called URL Juicer (@urljuicer). URL Juicer will shorten URLs using a variety of services including bit.ly. Enter your username and api in the credentials menu to get started.

Will Android take over Mobile OS World?

Posted by David R. Scott October - 26 - 2009 - Monday 1 COMMENT

There have been a rash of announcements from carriers in the U.S. about launching new Smart Phones utilizing the Android OS (Operating System) from various manufacturers including venerable Motorola.  With Motorola jumping into the Android pool head first with their launch of the ‘Cliq’ on November 19th on T-Mobile, and a second Android Smart Phone before year-end, is Android getting the traction it needs to challenge the two 800-pound Gorillas in RIM’s BlackBerry and Apple’s proprietary iPhone in the Mobile U.S. OS world?

Verizon has announced it will offer two Android Smart Phones this year with one of them being made my Motorola and Sprint is also seemingly in the Android love-fest as well.  AT&T has said they are still ‘evaluating’ Android but most likely they are trying to not dilute their iPhone sales while they still retain exclusivity from Apple.  Once AT&T dives deep into Android, the rush is on.

According to Gartner, Android will overtake of all other Mobile Operating Systems by 2012 except for Symbian which got it’s foothold with Nokia years ago, and it seems all the carriers are jumping onto Android, which is an open platform developed by Google.

The new Motorola Cliq, which I have discussed in previous blogs, will have a great Social Network interface for Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace with real-time status of what’s happening on your Facebook wall, etc.

The video below will show you some of the cool features of the Cliq using Android.

Verizon Goes Android (Slant on Iphone)

Posted by admin October - 19 - 2009 - Monday ADD COMMENTS

Verizon is preparing to launch their first Android device and as part of the launch they are announcing a new website called Droid Does. The whole idea seems to focus on all the things that Android does that the iPhone doesn’t and of course you could fill an entire website with that kind of content. Here is a teaser video:

MyMarket:: Filtering the Garbage of the Android Market

Posted by admin October - 8 - 2009 - Thursday ADD COMMENTS

mymarket androidMyMarket is awesome. In short it allows you to scan through the market for great apps without having to see the same junk all of the time. Filter out developers completely or certain types of apps by key words such as theme, calculator, etc.

You can also recommend and bookmark apps to other users of the mymarket app. This is a great idea!!!!The app moves remarkably fast and has all the browsing options you could wish for.

Below I have provided a summarized version of the developers summary and instructions. The complete version can be found on their website: http://www.mymarket.cc/

mymarket01MyMarket is a customizable overlay for the Android market which allows you to bookmark, recommend, remove, filter and preview items in the listings. The aim of this project is to bring more fun into browsing new and popular apps and games.

- Keyword filter for title & dev
- Description and comments preview
- Bookmark, recommend and remove items
- View recommendations based on user votes
- Basic search function
- My Downloads with Updates
- US and EU market results

Basics

MyMarket works quite similar to the normal Android market. The main categories are “Applications” and “Games” (with subcategories), “My Downloads” and Search, as well as Bookmarks, Recommended and Removed. In the settings users can select US or EU market results, and the way of searching for updates of installed apps.

Browsing

A single click on items toggles the options (detail preview, recommend, bookmark, send via mail, remove), a long click opens the Android market. The light bulb icon brings up a preview of the description and the first 3 comments of an app.

mymarket04The menu includes the “Change View” to switch between free, paid and both type of apps, and “Filter”. Custom filters can be created to remove items which include certain keywords (in the title or developer name).

Recommendation System

The recommendations of apps and games are generated each hour, based on how often this item was recommended by MyMarket users in the last few weeks. An item needs 4 votes to be included in the recommendations, and the number of votes are displayed below the rating.

Quickfilter

On browsing the category listings and adding a new filter, the last clicked items will be suggested (autocomplete) when entering the keyword.

LOVE IT!!!

The Latest Developments for Us Android Geeks

Brandon & I have been looking at the latest in Custom Roms since JF is no longer working. In the last week we have both updated to the most recent stable version of Cyanogen’s Build and we have partitioned our SD Cards to increase memory space and speed up the phone. So far so good. We are going to work on a new set of instructions to root your phone and a new set of instructions to update to Cyanogen if you are still on JF. In the meanwhile watch this funny video we found on YouTube. There are some really unhappy people out there because Google sent an ugly letter to Cyanogen to ask him to stop his work.

Pandora App makes on the go tunes UNLIMITED AND FREE

PANDORA APP ONLY AVAILABLE IN THE USA ANDROID MARKET::

Music, like most people I’m sure, is one of the biggest parts of my life. When I was working for T-Mobile, news of the G1 and the android open source project hit like wildfire in July. My first question upon hearing about the concept of “the iPhone killer” was how much of my HUGE iTunes library is it going to be able to handle. Originally Android would support up to a 4G micro SD card, so i was a little disappointed. Cupcake

however improved that to be able to handle a 16G micro SD, so I was a little happier with the release of Cupcake, but still not satisfied.  I remember watching Steve Jobs in the iPhone roll-out video hammering over and over again the iPhone’s potential to be the one device that seamlessly handles all of your needs from communication, to business, to entertainment.  So as I frequently peruse the android market for things that make my life easier I am consistently blown away at the inventive and intuitive ideas that people are using Google’s development tools (of which there are tons) to make my life better by organizing them into applications. With the release and superior functionality of the Pandora internet radio I literally don’t even need to store music on my phone so i have since deleted any songs i wasn’t immediately interested in editing into ring-tones with Ringdroid and using that space to download more apps.

Back in 2000 a handful of music lovers and techies got together with the idea of creating a website that delivered streaming music to its users. They decided to create what they call “the most comprehensive analysis of music, ever.” Pandora internet radio has been the result. I have enjoyed the service for about the last 6 or 7 years ( i was a late bloomer i guess) and it has been the source of some new favorites at least 3 times that i can recall.  Tim Westergren writes on the site:

“Since we started back in 2000, we’ve carefully listened to the songs of tens of thousands of different artists – ranging from popular to obscure – and analyzed the musical qualities of each song one attribute at a time. This work continues each and every day as we endeavor to include all the great new stuff coming out of studios, clubs and garages around the world.

It has been quite an adventure, you could say a little crazy – but now that we’ve created this extraordinary collection of music analysis, we think we can help be your guide as you explore your favorite parts of the music universe.

We hope you enjoy the journey.

The journey for me, continues with the Pandora internet radio application for android.  Currently the Pandora app occupies the 8th most popular download in the Android market just behind Google maps and Facebook.

I keep the Pandora app on my screen with the apps that I use most that are not necessarily related to the apps on the other screens… The widget has a couple of features that make me feel warm and fuzzy… This is what it looks like when your signed out of the app. Attractive, clean, accessible.  I have it set right underneath my widget for the music player on the phone because for me, they are truly interchangeable.

Then the app works in a few different functions. It can play in the background which is sweet. When it is activated the Pandora Icon remains in your notifications bar as an ongoing app so you can quickly open and control it from any application on your phone. This was fun today, i was sitting in a parking lot tweeting and editing our Twitter account (follow us if your not already) while connected to the internet using my G1 as a wireless router. Salt Lake Cities’ brand new 3G (launched in

the middle of Sept. 09) was handling perfect uninterrupted streaming of the Pandora music while it was also carrying all of my data that i was using with the computer having like 9 tabs open in Firefox.

Then, you can pause Pandora from streaming music, do other things on the phone and pick up right where you left out while not having to sign out and sign back in.

Pandora lives up to its name, the Greek translation of the word Pandora means “all-giving,” and i cannot find a downfall to this app it really is all giving! I simply cannot get enough of it. I use it when im driving around (which i do a lot for my job, about 250 miles a day or so) if i get sick of my tunes on shuffle or my playlists or whatever then I just go to Pandora and let it feed me with great variety and even stuff I have never even heard before. Kudos to Pandora! I click their Google ads every once in a while just to cash flow the app a VERY little bit every once in a while (they get like .20 cents any time you click). We give it 5 stars for functionality, aesthetics and ease of use! We recommend it to anyone who loves using their phone as a music player!
